Does Sam Cheever Have a Monkey on Her Back?

Multi-published author Sam Cheever is here today to discuss her addiction and how she handles it. Thanks for coming, Sam, floor is all yours.

You're welcome, Sloane, I'm glad to be here.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. It’s something I haven’t really shared with anybody before, but anyone who really knows me probably won’t be surprised. I’m a food addict. Yup, it’s true. I LOVE food with a passion. I come by it honestly. All of our family events evolve around food. We love to eat it, we love to share new recipes, and we wouldn’t consider getting together without planning a massive eating event. Are we all grossly overweight? Not at all. Some of us are slightly more rounded than we’d like to be (me!) but we have to make sure we get enough exercise and eat more carefully in between our gastronomic events.

I tell you this because I’ve always battled that extra 10 to 20 pounds. Even as a teen I was rounder than I wanted to be. Along with this battle came self-love issues. Obviously, it’s all tied together in a society that values thin bodies above all things. I consider my near obsessive love of food an addiction. The problem with a food addiction is you can’t remove the temptation completely from your life. You need to eat. You need to have food around all the time. Which means you have to have a tremendous strength of will to avoid overeating. About the best you can do is eat stuff that tastes like butt. I mean, isn’t that pretty much what a diet is? Eating stuff you probably wouldn’t touch with a ten inch spatula if you weren’t trying to carve a few inches of jiggly stuff off your hips? But if you truly love food. If you have a passion for it like I do…it’s incredibly sad to force tasteless, rubbery food down your gullet when there’s so much yummy stuff around you could be enjoying.

My solution? I wish I had one. I generally try to avoid the worst offenders such as things that are fried or laden with butter and cream. I eat smaller quantities and try to work out regularly. I’m not perfect, as evidenced by my still curvy form, but I don’t want to live my life hating and depriving myself.

If, like me, you’ve fought against weight gain for a while and are tired of fighting the battle, you’ll enjoy The Biggest Poser. This book is based loosely on the reality show of almost the same name #:0) and deals with the battle of the bulge in a fun story filled with characters you’ll love, characters you’ll hate, and, as an added bonus, gives you a mystery to solve and a romance to enjoy along the way.

May the biggest liar win. Or die trying!

Personal trainer for the ever popular, Lose it! reality show, Jillie Maxwell is up for the most important award of her career. And she’s competing against the biggest b-eye-itch she’s ever met. Fortunately for her, she has the sexiest man alive in her corner. Problem is, each and every one of them has a dirty little secret that could tank a career.

For the contestants, the race is on to lose the most weight and win everything. For the staff of the popular weight loss show, the clock is ticking to the culmination of their lies and the possibility of losing it all.
Will the Biggest Poser win? Or will the lies just grow and grow until they sink the whole show? Only one thing is certain. Whatever happens, it’s gonna be an entertaining ride!

EXCERPT:
She found him in the gym, working his pecs with a couple of twenty-pound weights. She stood just inside the door and watched him for a few minutes, enjoying the way his muscles flexed against the thin T-shirt and shorts he wore. Sweat gave his skin a fine sheen and darkened the material of his shirt around the neckline and across his broad back.
Jillie’s thighs tightened at the sight. She chewed on her bottom lip, losing all desire to confront him with the letter. She shoved the letter deeper inside her hoodie pocket and started to turn around.

“Jillie?”

She stopped and, taking a deep breath, turned to face him, forcing a smile.

He stood next to the weight bench, a towel around his neck. He was grinning. “Did you come to work out?”
She hesitated only a moment and then lied through her teeth. “Yeah. I did. I didn’t expect to find you here.”
He mopped at his face with the towel. “I was just thinking about you.”

Pleasure spiked and her smile softened. “You were? What were you thinking?” She headed across the room.

“I was going over a recipe in my mind. I thought of you because I know you’d like it.”

“Ooh, now you’re talking my language.” She headed for a treadmill and climbed on, setting it for a five percent incline and five miles per hour to warm up. Brandt took the treadmill next to her. “It’s a mocha fudge cake, with mousse frosting.”

“Oh. My. God! That can’t possibly be low calorie.”

“I think it will be. I have some things to work out. But I have a high level of confidence I can make it happen.”
Jillie shook her head. “If I hung out with you I’d weigh a thousand pounds.” She upped the miles per hour and broke into a run. The sound of the treadmill Brandt was on changed, telling her he’d upped his speed too. When she looked over, he was staring at her.

“No. You wouldn’t. First of all, my recipes only taste fattening. They aren’t really fattening. Secondly, you’d work off every calorie.”

The look he gave her made her miss a step and almost fall off the treadmill. She gasped and grabbed the handle bar, barely keeping herself upright. When she looked at him again he’d notched a single eyebrow upward, his eyes sparking with humor.

Jillie wasn’t brave enough to ask him how she’d work off those calories. She upped her speed another mile per hour and he followed. She turned to him and found him grinning. “Is this a challenge?”

“What do you think?”

She snorted. “I think you’ll lose, cook.”

The other eyebrow notched up to match its twin. “Oh, so that’s how it’s gonna be?”

Jillie bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling and nodded. “Yeah. That’s how it’s gonna be.”

“All right then. Bring it, trainer.”

“Five percent incline, cook.”

He increased his incline.

Jillie reached up and increased the speed two more notches. She was running full out on a five percent incline. “Nine miles per hour.”

He frowned. “Oh please, I can do that in my sleep.”

She snorted. “Ten it is then. I was trying to take it easy on you.”

Brandt laughed outright. “We’ll see who’s left standing in twenty minutes.”

“Thirty.”

“Thirty-five is my final offer.”

Done. “Forty minutes.”

GORDON RAMSAY FRONT AND CENTER

Born in Scotland and raised in England, Gordon Ramsay has soared to stardom in the kitchen and has earned no less than 12 Michelin stars in his short career. This creative Master Chef is also the proud owner of no less than fifteen pubs and restaurants around the world. His accomplishments include television programs and a wide selection of amazing cookbooks.

Today we're sharing with you a fantastic cookbook I badgered my kids to buy me. They're grateful to have done so as they reap the benefits. :)

GORDON RAMSAY'S WORLD KITCHEN
Recipes from The F-Word
Gordon Ramsay
ISBN 13: 9781554701995
Key Porter Books

All Chef Ramsay's books are available at your local bookstores and from Amazon.

Gordon Ramsay's World Kitchen is filled with recipes from starters through desserts from ten different countries. If you're not a fish lover, don't be swayed from this exceptional book. There are scads of recipes you'll still love to prepare and eat. We have two favorites I've prepared for us and company. First is wild mushrooms on griddled polenta with pecorino, page 37. This appetizer has a beautiful aftertaste. The other is buffalo chicken wings with sour cream and chive dip, page 232. They are so flavorful you can make a meal on them alone.

Chef Ramsay makes it easy with photos and concise direction for preparation. From novice to expert, Gordon Ramsay's World Kitchen is a cookbook every kitchen must own.

I'll be back Wednesday with the Queen of Hot, Jan Springer. Until then...

Happy Cooking!

Welcome to the Los Padres National Forest. A vacation from hell.

Spider

Nobody died today.

That’s a good day in my books, but I knew it wouldn’t last.

Westside had a major hard on for Eastside. War was brewing. Fideo and his WS crew shot up the East Beach, then a week later, on Memorial Day, did the same at a market on Anacapa Street. That time their aim had improved. They dropped two Eastside bangers and a ten-year-old boy out buying milk for his grandmother. Both OGs made it. The kid didn’t. Chalk it up to collateral damage from the drug war.

We canvassed the market and caught a couple of witnesses who saw the whole thing. So we nailed Fideo along with two members of his posse, and tossed their cholo butts in jail. Fideo lawyered up with a good uptown legal beagle, but still sat in lockup, no bail. Then another drive-by took out witness one. Suddenly our only remaining witness “made a mistake.” The paperwork wasn’t dry before the scrotes were back in the hood and the witness was in hiding. Fideo rode with his ese through his hood, crowing how he beat 5-0. His street creds firmly embellished by his latest exploits, he was back, and he was stronger.

And took up his business of dealing drugs, death and taxes without losing a night’s sleep.

Miguel, my new partner, snapped his frustration. “How can we stop these people if no one will testify against them?”

I shrugged. “It bites, I agree. But look at it from their side. Hard to testify from a pine box.”

“God will take care of them.”

“Right.” I rolled my eyes, making sure he couldn’t see the gesture. “I’m sure Mr. Gillespie’s family feel the same way.” Gillespie had been witness number one, a businessman leaving a wife and two young kids behind. He told me when I interviewed him the first time he had to talk. That it wasn’t right that these men could terrorize a neighborhood and get away with it. What kind of example did that set for his kids? Well, I guess his kids learned a valuable lesson there. But probably not the one their old man wanted to give. We had gone to Gillespie’s funeral yesterday, per department regulations. Not surprising, no one from Westside showed or sent their condolences. Not that there was much we could have done if they had. As usual, we had no proof that put any Westside banger anywhere near the vicinity of Gillespie’s untimely death. What we had were two bullets from a 9 mil that couldn’t be tied to any other crimes. A clean gun for a clean hit.

There was a time when my frustration level would have surpassed Miguel’s. Those days are long gone. First thing you learn on the job, leave it at the station. Taking it home with you is the surest way to give yourself high blood pressure and a date with your own duty weapon, or your cardiologist.

There was a time I used to share my world with dead people. The homicides I couldn’t solve would follow me home and make me hold them in my memory. The more brutal they were, the more they clung to me, needing closure I couldn’t give them.

Then Jason burst into my life, unasked and unlooked for. I hooked him up and tossed his ass in jail for the murder of a man it turned out he’d never met. A lot of people would have flipped me the bird for what I did, but Jason wasn’t like that. There wasn’t a vengeful bone in his perfect body. Instead, once he was released from jail, we’d gone out to dinner, ended up back at my place with my dick up his ass, and my heart in his hands. I realized then I never wanted to let this guy go. It took me months to be able to admit my feelings to myself, let alone to Jason. Then, I damn near fucked what we had up permanently when my petty jealousy turned me into a dangerous fool. It probably would have served me right if Jay had told me to fuck off when I got up the nerve to follow him to Los Angeles. He didn’t, and here we are, two months later, sharing a bed and a bath, and hopefully, a future.

Sometimes my dead people still come around to stalk my dreams, but now there’s an anchor to hold onto when I wake up in a cold sweat, with my heart pounding and my mouth dry with unspoken fear; there to whisper soothing words, not press me for explanations I was loathe to give anyone. Even for Jason I didn’t show weakness.

He gave me back my life. So why can’t I give him the one thing he wants? Because I’m a fucking coward who’s afraid of losing control again? Afraid? Fuck that. Alexander Spider isn’t afraid of anything. Or anyone.

The morning after Gillespie’s funeral I got up before Jason. Dressing after my shower, I stood over our bed, studying him while I buttoned my shirt. Sometime during the night he had kicked his covers off exposing his delicious butt, and all I had to do was reach out and stroke the peach soft skin. I knew my touch would instantly wake him up, and I had no trouble imagining those sleepy eyes falling on me and that slow, sexy smile he only gave to me. We’d both been too tired last night to do anything but fall into bed. There was nothing sleepy about my body now. My dick pressed painfully against my briefs and I shifted, trying to ease the sudden constriction.

LIFE IS GOOD

When you enjoy a perfect evening at an excellent restaurant. Studs and I were fortunate enough to have just that this past Saturday at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano in Bloomington, IL.

We kicked off the evening with a cocktail at the bar until our table was set which only took a matter of minutes.

As usual, I was cheat sheeting the menu and rapidly scrawling the ingredients for Chicken Piemontese, Tilapia with Lemon Caper Cream and Formaggi Di Cappa, a delicious herbed goat cheese, when our server caught me. After a few jokes about me and a prison cell, Adam got down to the business of the day's specials and offered wonderful suggestions for the ideal dinner. Not only does he have a marvelous sense of humor, the man knows his food.

Throughout the expertly served meal we got to learn a little about Adam's life. He was originally from Elgin, Illinois and has worked in kitchens since the tender age of thirteen. Adam came to Bloomington to visit friends. One night they dined at Biaggi's, during which he chatted with the manager and head chef. The next day Adam was hired and prepared to relocate. We asked about his future plans. Adam's dream is to own a restaurant. From the short time we were together, Studs and I are confident this young man will be a huge success.

He shared a rib recipe with us but, like all creative cooks, didn't commit to the ingredient amounts. I don't think it would be hard for any of us to figure it out. I hope.

ADAM'S RIBS

Apple Cider
Brown Sugar
Chili Flakes
Spare Ribs

Pre-boil ribs until they almost fall off the bone.

Over medium heat bring the apple cider to a boil. Add brown sugar and chili flakes. Continue to cook until the sauce is candied.

Heat the oven to 350 F. Brush the sauce over the ribs and bake for 30 minutes.

Sure sounds good to me!

Biaggi's is a casual dress restaurant even though the tables are set with crisp linens. They offer superb fresh food and have a flair for creating an intimate atmosphere with subdued lighting and plenty of space between tables. It is a beautiful experience and one we will enjoy many times. It's a must, their menu's too tempting!

They have twenty restaurants around the country. To find the one closest to you click HERE. I guarantee you'll love the food at any of them. Unfortunately, you won't have Adam, and that's a real shame.

I'll be back tomorrow with a bit of unabashed self-promotion. :) Until then...

Happy Writing!

BLURB:

Determined to prove herself and shed her party girl image, Donatienne Dubois pins her hopes on the exclusive cooking school in Nice, France. One by one her expectations are shattered by a foul-mouthed parrot, a bogus Michelin chef, and a headmistress with a heart of tungsten steel. Her lifesaver is a bad boy hunk too hot not to handle.

Sebastien Reinard is incognito, hating every minute. To pose as a student while protecting a rich wild child is his version of hell, until he partners with the slice of Crème Brule good enough to eat.

Class takes on a whole new meaning as Doni and Sebastien heat up the kitchen when they discover honey has better uses than sweetening tea.

EXCERPT:

Ooh la la, Mademoiselle, voulez-vous à la baise?”

Donatienne’s running shoes squeaked to a halt on the cracked, gray linoleum. Fuck him? She didn’t fuck just anyone, especially if she didn’t know his name.

“Not unless you have more money than I could ever dream of, you pig.” She refused to turn back toward the crackly voice.

“What? Is your pussy made from gold?”

She gritted her teeth. Insolent bastard.

“Yes, it is. And equipped with a set of rusty fangs to rip off anything that tries to get inside.” Smartass answers weren’t her best first impression at the haute cuisine cooking school she’d waited so long to attend. She had to shake the lowlife who thought he could get away with insults before Chef tossed her out.

Ignore him. Just keep moving. Doni straightened her shoulders and walked past the double door refrigerator.

“Perhaps you prefer to give Pierre a blow job. He would make it worth your time.” A cackle filled the air. “Come on, baby. You know you want me, you slut.”

The fine hairs at the nape of her neck jumped to attention. Doni whirled around, swinging out her arm. She launched her heavy tote at the dumpy man in the splattered apron planted in front of the stainless steel stove.

Ooof.

A satisfying sound to Doni’s ears as her bag connected with his diaphragm and he buckled.

She sprinted a dozen steps toward him, punching air until her fists mashed into his doughy flesh. He shot out his hands. She dodged to the right, away from his reach. Her feet slipped on the waxed floor. Flailing her arms, she grabbed for anything handy. Crash. A white cloud billowed up, blinding her. They fell to the floor with Doni on top, tangled in a mass of apron and legs.

“Protect your balls. Protect your balls. The slut is crazy.”
