MARFAN, DO YOU HAVE IT?

Today we have a guest blogger, Bruce Klein, President Northern Illinois Marfan Chapter. I hope you all read what Bruce has to say. It is life saving.

This is the year of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday, which brings on my question;

What do Marfan Patients and Abraham Lincoln Have in Common?

Abe Lincoln was thought to have Marfan syndrome. What is this dreaded disease?
Marfan syndrome is a connective tissue disorder discovered by Dr. Antoine Marfan in 1896 in France when he treated several children with this disorder.

This sometimes inherited condition effects approximately 1 in every 5000 people in the U.S. While only sometimes inherited, it’s been proven that 75% of the cases diagnosed are inherited and the other 25% of the cases are a new spontaneous mutation at birth.

Researchers today have learned that this condition is caused by a mutation of certain chromosomes that effect a protein called fibrillin. Fibrillin is the glue that holds our bodies or connective tissue together and is found throughout us from head to toe. Like in most syndromes and diseases there are varying degrees of Marfan syndrome from mild cases to severe and life threatening. Diagnosis of Marfan syndrome is often missed by doctors who do not have experience in treating patients with this disorder. We have 5 established clinics in the Chicagoland area which will be posted in this blog Monday, April 6.

Some symptoms of Marfan syndrome are:

Taller than Average Long Thin Face
Hyper-mobility of All Joints
A Disproportionment of Body, Arm & Leg Length
Long Fingers and Toes
Flat Feet
Eye, Lens Dislocation
Curvature of the Spine
Hernias
Stretch Marks
Chest Deformity (Pectus Excavatum or Carinatum)
Spontaneous Pneumothorax
Heart Murmur & Aortic Artery Dilation (Aneurysms) which can be fatal

EXCERPT:

By the time Sophie turned into the dirt parking lot of a country general store claiming to have everything a person needed, from wedding gowns to worms, the temperature had risen to a mild seventy-five, or so read the old thermometer hanging on the loose clapboards. She peeled off her sweater and tossed it behind the seat.

“This is it?”

She controlled the urge to snap at Hawk. What reason did he have to sound so cranky? “What do you mean?”

He waved his hand toward the store. “You call this a store? I believe you said the place had everything. I can’t believe this.”

The accusation in his tone pissed her off. “What did you expect? A super Wal-Mart? We’re approaching the Yukon Territories. There are no big cities.” Disgusted, she climbed out, slammed the door and strode toward the store, not caring if he followed or not.

Hawk made it to the door before her and held it open. Like the gentleman he wasn’t. Sophie breezed by without a glance and headed straight to the meat section. Having been in most of the stores on the highway, she wasn’t surprised at the lack of good quality food. Today the hamburger looked fresh, as did the steak. The chicken and the package labeled pork chops looked questionable. They’d be eating beef for awhile.

Next she grabbed a bag of wilted spinach and a bunch of yellowed broccoli, shaking her head at what passed as fresh vegetables. Two loaves of bread added to her pile, and she was ready to check out.

Where the hell was Hawk? The man had been a thorn in her side since he woke this morning. Sophie found him looking at deodorant. “It’s not as if you have a million choices. Pick one and let’s get on the road.”

Hawk frowned. “What’s wrong with you?”

Huh? He was the one who got up on the wrong side of the bed. Then again… “I’m short of patience this morning.”

“Tell me about it,” he muttered. “I ordered a couple of Italians at the deli. They should be ready.”

“Fine. Get them and let’s get back on the road.”

Hawk’s smile warmed his eyes along with her insides. “I’m right behind you. I’ve got to get one more thing.”

The young store clerk had almost finished ringing up her items when Hawk arrived with his deodorant, the sandwiches, a bag of chips and a bag of limp carrots with roots growing out of their entire length.

He handed the bag to the young kid. “For the bunny.”

Sophie’s skull near exploded. How dare he?

The clerk jumped right in. “You have rabbits? My family raises them…to eat. They taste like chicken, you know.”

Hawk laughed. “We’ve just got one. Cute little thing. I might have to start looking at her as a meal.”

Sophie dug her nails into his arm. “That’s what you think.”

“Ouch,” Hawk said and moved out of her reach.

The clerk chuckled, bagged their items and nodded at Hawk. “You’d better watch it. Sounds like the little bunny means a lot to your lady.”

“Yeah, we’re both attached to Furry. She’s so warm and cuddly. Why just last night—”

Sophie grabbed her bag. “I’ll be in the truck.”

She turned on heel and took a step. His voice stopped her cold. “Sophie? I don’t have any money.”

Breathing fire, Sophie stalked to the register haphazardly pulling money from her purse along the way. She slapped a handful of bills in Hawk’s hand. “Here.” The warm smile along with the twinkle in his eyes got her toes tingling, but she forced herself to turn back the way she’d come.

She never made it to the door. It wasn’t the man dressed in the red and black plaid shirt and green wool pants peering at a bulletin board that raised the alarm. Neither was it the rancid body odor emanating from his person. Nor was it Hawk’s picture on a wanted poster that freaked her out. The smelly Neanderthal sneaking covert looks between Hawk and his picture made her skin crawl.

How the hell had this happened? She refused to consider this was Stan’s doing. That left Reed and Blair. They must have printed an official-looking FBI wanted poster. She noticed the number to call was not an FBI hotline, or at least not one she was familiar with. Was Hawk’s image in every store between here and Alaska? A chill rattled down her spine. Had the poster been here when they’d come in. Surely, she’d have seen it. Were the two rogue agents lurking outside? Waiting for the opportunity to nab Hawk?

Even though Hawk’s face was smooth and clean shaven in the photograph, he was easily recognizable. Those damn whiskey colored eyes.

Before Sophie could react, an overweight woman wearing a sweatshirt sporting a colorful tied fishing fly with the slogan Check your Fly showed up behind the guy. “Move it, Everett. I wanna fish today, not tomorrow.”

Everett glanced in Sophie’s direction. She pretended interest in the magazines precariously perched on an old, teetering steel rack. He dragged the woman to his side, his wide grin revealing toothless gums. Then he whispered loud enough for anyone within ten feet to hear, “Look at this, Mel!” His finger jabbed the poster. “FBI’s offering a $20,000 reward for this dude.” His voice rose with excitement. “And guess what? He’s standing right over there.” With all the finesse of an orangutan, he lifted an arm and pointed it at Hawk still chatting with the young kid behind the counter.

“At times, late in the evening, the air is infused with a hint of cinnamon and chocolate.” His eyes twinkled as if he were sharing a dark secret. “Tempts one to indulge in a decadent dessert. Would you care for one, Ms Peters?”

A shiver weaved its way up her spine when he said her name. With shaking fingers, she took a gulp of ice water, ordering her oversexed body to behave.

“If nothing on the menu appeals to you, Chef Claude would be elated to whip up whatever you prefer.”

British and gorgeous. And then it sunk in. Chef Claude.

“Is he Claude St. Cyr? The same chef who owns a cooking school?”

The waiter from every woman’s fantasy grinned. “One in the same.”

Now what the hell is he doing in a place like this?

“Ms Peters?” He tapped a well-groomed fingernail on the menu.

“What? Oh yes.” She flipped open the leather jacket to scan the tasty treats, her one downfall. The card read like an international list of culinary sexual pleasures.

Emily slipped the cap off her lipstick tube, then did an unhurried swipe along her bottom lip, wondering just how far the presenters would go.

“Do you see anything you like?” His deep voice played havoc with her senses as she squirmed in her damp panties.

“Too bad you don’t offer Cumberland Rum Nicky. I enjoyed it at a restaurant in London a few years ago. Never found it again.” His tanned face paled as if she’d requested to borrow The Crown Jewels.

“Perhaps a dish of Whim Wham?”

“No thanks, I’m fanciful enough.” She laughed at her little joke about the true meaning of the Scottish pie. “I’d really like a Benedictine straight up and a cup of black coffee.”

He nodded and walked toward the bar area.

Of all the waitstaff Emily had encountered or seen during her two hours over dinner, this last was the paix de la résistance. Sable brown hair caressed his white shirt collar. She’d give anything to run her fingers through the thick waves.

The Reverend and ladies met with her lickable waiter at the doorway. He stood to the side, gesturing for them to go first. The tallest of the women stopped and started up a conversation, but he backed away the moment she ran her fingers along his jaw line.

Seems like the help gets to play with the clientele.

Emily pulled the cap off her lipstick tube.

Smile, I think you’re going to like this one.

REVIEW from ALTERNATIVE-READ:

This is a bit different than the norm and quite frankly I adored it. I wasn't too sure of how it ended until I realized it left the perfect opportunity for another wow part (hint, hint). The woman was just the way I like to read them; strong, intelligent, yet at the same time vulnerable, while the male was assertive, smart, and able to be tender at the same time. It was a mix made in heaven (and the mind of a talented writer) which is easily one to read over and over.

IS IT REAL?

Have you ever heard such good news that you’re positive the message can’t be true? Reread it a zillion times and it still won’t sink in? Or been offered a tangible item that is so precious, so important you’re completely blown away?

All that happened to me Wednesday, and two days later I’m still in happy shock. This news has to be shared, then maybe I will believe it's real.

I am ecstatic to announce AMBER QUILL PRESS has offered me a writing contract for my latest work CZECH MATE, a sexy little number that takes place in Prague. An editor is assigned and a tentative release is scheduled for this spring.

I am grateful to my critique partners, Beth Anderson, Melissa Bradley, Erica Dananay, Virginia Deweese and Dorothy Emery for whipping me into shape so this fantastic opportunity could become a reality.

“Are you an artist?” She glanced up. Her large green eyes reminded him of polished emerald, sharp and clear, and just as exciting. At that moment he would be anything the beautiful American wanted him to be.

She sniffed again and held her hand at arm’s length, inspecting her nails. That irritating, hoity-toity attitude of hers had to go. “Plus, you exaggerate. I simply checked one of the little boxes on the form and mailed it to the supplier. He obviously made the mistake, if what you say is truth.”

He slapped the side of the desk to get her undivided attention. Right then he’d do anything to erase the image of those well toned calves wrapped around his neck. Dammit, why were French women so sexy?

“No, doll, there’s literally a ton of cow dung right out there on the circular drive.” He hooked a thumb over his shoulder, his other hand nudging her legs aside to grab a sheaf of papers. “I don’t know what the hell you ordered, but that’s what you got. So what’s your plan, baby? I happen to have a shovel in your size.”

Her chair skated back, just short of hitting the bookcase. Gritting her teeth, she tossed the little glass nail file she’d been using onto a stack of papers and stood.

“Do not treat me like a stupid woman—.” Cheeks flaming, she got right into his face. “Or your wife.”

“One, you’re not stupid. You only like to pretend you are.” He ticked the points off the fingers on his free hand. “Two, thank God I don’t have a wife. With my bad luck, she might have been just like you.”

She glared at him for one intense second before she jerked the order form from his hand.

“You, monsieur, need to be taught manners.”

“You, mademoiselle, need a good spanking.”

A coy smile tweaked the corners of her pouty, full lips. “That may be so, you uptight Américain, but this is not the time to discuss my sexual preferences.”

Later that day Claudette stood in front of him wearing just a smile and her red stilettos heightened her awareness. And need. The dingy hallway seemed brighter; the stale air fresh with his unique scent of spice and lime. She sensed his desire as if it had life of its own, and knew this was right.

Her nipples pebbled, the shower fantasy fresh in her mind. Her gaze locked with his. She stretched an arm behind her and undid the oversize metal clip from her hair. With a toss of her head long strands cascaded below her shoulders, the ends tickling across her breasts.

Lisette stared straight ahead, fascinated as the stud began his routine.

Neatly, he folded the worn cloth then bent and laid it at his feet. His languid movements a beautiful torture to this single woman. He allowed his hat to roll off his head and down his arm then placed it on the shirt. His black ponytail brushed against the thick column of his neck. The loose ends of the thin leather strip holding his lion’s mane in place grazed the small white scar on his shoulder.

He stretched his arms high in the air then arced them downward and rested his hands at the small of his back. Slowly, he swiveled his upper body from side to side. She licked her lips again as she stared at his dark brown nipples, tight and pointy.

His muscles rippled as he bent over to do something with his black work boots. The material of his worn khaki slacks pulled tight across his perfect ass, accentuating the outline of his large balls. Ignore him. Just keep moving. Doni straightened her shoulders and walked past the double door refrigerator.

“Perhaps you prefer to give Pierre a blow job. He would make it worth your time.” A cackle filled the air. “Come on, baby. You know you want me, you slut.”

The fine hairs at the nape of her neck jumped to attention. Doni whirled around, swinging out her arm. She launched her heavy tote at the dumpy man in the splattered apron planted in front of the stainless steel stove.

They fell to the floor with Doni on top, tangled in a mass of apron and legs.

“Right, and this is only foreplay.” Just to leave a permanent impression on the scruffy chef’s assistant, she yanked his handlebar moustache until her fingertips were covered with what she hoped were tears.

“Mademoiselle, calm yourself.” His rich baritone did nothing to soothe her. It created the opposite effect, which shocked Doni as a coil of heat charged to her clit.

“Chef Bonnot, I’m so sorry.” The urge to bow and kiss his hand overwhelmed her.

“No, no, mademoiselle, you have…”

“I apologize, sir.” Damn, her cherished plans to own a five-star restaurant flashed before her eyes. Somehow she had to make this right. For once she would prove to her father she wasn’t the major screw up he thought. She choked back the tears, threatening to gush like Niagara Falls. “I wouldn’t normally act like this, but your helper talks like a pig and I over-reacted. I’m really sorry.”

He laid his fingertips over her lips. Strong and warm. A shiver ran through her at the thought of sliding her tongue over the pads.

“Stop talking.” She sucked in air. A sensual aroma of lime and spice filled her lungs as she stared up at the king of haute cuisine.
